What is a bottomless portafilter and what is it used for?

Bottomless portafilters are used as a training tool, They have been produced either by the manufacturer or sent to a machinist to have the spouts removed.  The bottomless portafilters all come with a triple insert basket.  It will provide you with immediate feedback and can see if channeling occurs right away.

Channeling is the rapid passage of water through fractures in the coffee puck, which produces a thinner, under-extracted espresso. When it occurs, you'll often see sudden appearances of blond streaks in the stream of espresso; sometimes the puck will even have pencil lead-sized holes where channeling occurred.

The Rancilio ergonomic (with RR logo), the La Spaziale and the La Marzocco come directly from the manufacturers.  The generic Rancilio and all of the other high quality portafilters start out a spouted portafilters.

After deciding to sell these bottomless portafilters, and to only use high-quality portafilters to start with, the next part was the hardest -- finding a machinist who could modify them to the standards that I know my customers expect. Dan Kehn introduced me to Lino Verna, espresso enthusiast and skilled machinist. • RANCILIO is available in a 2 styles; The Rancilio logo with ergonomic handle OR the generic style, for those with an E61 group that prefer not to have the Rancilio logo.  
  They fit the commercial machines, the Silvia, as well as E61 group machines.  Some examples are: Quick Mill Andreja Premium, Anita, Vetrano, Alexia and Silvano - Izzo Alex and Alex Duetto -  Isomac Millenium, Tea, Rituale, Relax, Zaffiro, and Amica. - Expobar Office Control, Office Pulser, Office Lever, and Brewtus. - ECM Giotto, Giotto Cellini, Rocket, and Giotto Premium. - Grimac, and Grimac Valentina. Included with the portafilter is a standard Triple Insert Basket.
  
  
• The LA SPAZIALE portafilter fits all commercial La Spaziale machines as well as the MIni Vivaldi and the Vivaldi II. This portafilter is cut out by the manufacturer so you will notice the nice chrome finish on the bottom.  Included with the portafilter is a La Spaziale Triple Insert Basket.
  
  
• LA MARZOCCO fits all commercial La Marzocco machines, including the GS3. Included with the portafilter is a standard Triple Insert Basket.
  
  
• LA CIMBALI fits almost all Cimbali machines, from the Junior Casa on up. Included with the portafilter is a standard Triple Insert Basket. Note: This does not fit the lever-action piston Cimbali.
  
  
• NUOVA SIMONELLI fits their commercial machines such as Aurelia and Appia, as well as the Oscar.  Also included is a Nuova Simonelli Triple Insert Basket.
