Description

A single bottomless portafilter for the Vesuvius by M&V. The portafilter originally started out as a spouted portafilter. Included with the portafilter is a triple insert basket.

What is a bottomless portafilter and what is it used for?

Bottomless portafilters are used as a training tool. It will provide you with immediate feedback and can see if channeling occurs right away. Channeling is the rapid passage of water through fractures in the coffee puck, which produces a thinner, under-extracted espresso. When it occurs, you'll often see sudden appearances of blond streaks in the stream of espresso; sometimes the puck will even have pencil lead-sized holes where channeling occurred.

Does not fit any VST 18g+ ridgeless baskets April 4, 2015

I have an 18, 20 and 22g ridgeless VST basket that does not fit in this portafilter. The smallest 18g one actually does fit, but when espresso is channeling it gets caught on the ledge and runs along the outside rim, and down the handle.

On the other hand, the basket that is included works perfectly, but I would rather use my ridgeless baskets.

Great compliment to an amazing machine! April 2, 2015

Very high quality. Bottom is completely chrome plated so it won't mar your grinder fork or tamping surface. Only negative I've noticed is that the bottom isn't cut wide enough to accommodate a LM triple basket completely. I don't use LM triples anyways so it's a non issue with me. Easily fits all other baskets I own including Synesso 18g ridgeless triples.
